LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ proposal to restrict the public’s access to records about her administration, travel and security stumbled at the outset of a special legislative session that convened Monday, with lawmakers trying to rework the legislation in the face of growing criticism that it erodes the state’s open records law.The House and Senate ended the day without any action on the legislation, one of several items Sanders placed on the agenda for the special session she announced Friday. The Senate scuttled plans to hold a committee hearing Monday night on the bill, with leaders saying they did not yet have a revised version of the proposed changes to the state’s Freedom of Information Act.“We’ve made amendment after amendment after amendment today. It’s just not ready,” Senate President Bart Hester told a committee room packed mostly with opponents of the legislation who had been waiting to to testify on t...New highways carve into Cairo’s City of the Dead cemetery as Egypt’s government reshapes the city

CAIRO (AP) — The cane chairs and umbrella still stand in the courtyard of Hussein Omar’s family mausoleum, where his grandmother came every morning for 19 years after her daughter — his mother — died. Near her grave, she would sit and pray under the date palm and among the flowering plants, a few hours of peace in Cairo ’s historic City of the Dead. Now the mausoleum, built in 1924 in a neo-Islamic style and housing the graves of a number of prominent Egyptians from a century ago, is threatened with demolition.Authorities have already razed hundreds of tombs and mausoleums as they carry out plans to build a network of multilane highways through the City of the Dead, a vast cemetery that has been in use for more than a millennium. Stunned preservationists say the construction is destroying a unique part of Egypt’s heritage where major Islamic figures, prominent Egyptian politicians, artists and scholars and the loved ones of many Egyptians are buried.“It’s always felt like a very sacr...Tuesday’s Aerosmith concert in Toronto rescheduled after Steven Tyler hurts vocal chords

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Federal lawsuits, cries for impeachment and outside protests.Democratic New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said she would welcome a fight after announcing an emergency order to suspend the right to carry firearms in most public places around Albuquerque. That’s exactly what she’s getting. Since she issued the 30-day public health order on Friday, a furor has rained down from gun owners, state Republican lawmakers and civil rights advocates. Even some in her own party questioned the move. The sheriff who oversees the county that includes New Mexico’s largest city, Albuquerque, vowed Monday not to enforce it, joining the county’s top prosecutor, and the Albuquerque mayor and city’s police chief. “It’s unconstitutional, so there’s no way we can enforce that order,” Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen said during a news conference. “This ban does nothing to curb gun violence.”A gun rights group filed a federal lawsu...Jets’ Rodgers carted from sideline after suffering ankle injury in first series

The last month of the regular season is usually prime time for scoreboard watching. But the American League Central is so far from competitive at this point that it’s time for Twins fans to shift their attention away from the second-place Cleveland Guardians and to other races. The Twins haven’t clinched a playoff spot. And manager Rocco Baldelli and those within the clubhouse will be the first to point that out.But as the regular season enters its final few weeks, the Twins hold a 99.6% chance of making the playoffs, per FanGraphs, with the Cleveland Guardians sitting 7 1/2 games back entering Monday’s play, and the Twins holding a magic number of 12 before Monday’s games. Now the question isn’t so much if they will make the playoffs but rather whom they will play.FanGraphs gives the Twins a 0.4% chance of clinching a bye, which would require them to pass one of the American League East (Baltimore) or West (Houston) division leaders, with the Astros being the closer of the two....Staying prepared for National Preparedness Month
