If you time it right, you can have this Colorado hot spring all to yourself

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:29:07 GMT

Like any aging millennial, I had discovered Desert Reef, a recently updated hot spring destination in southern Colorado, while endlessly scrolling. After a massive renovation beginning in 2021, the locally beloved springs in Florence, 45 minutes outside of Colorado Springs, had just reopened with overnight accommodations and a new, enticing offer: Tuesday night soaks with the pools only open to overnight visitors.Depending on the timing, that could mean just two of us in the pools or, at most, 20 people scattered around the vast property (there are 10 available rooms for booking). So with a month to go until our wedding, I asked my fiance to pack a bag one Tuesday after work and drive south with me. The plan was to soak in the hot springs after nightfall and then sleep under the stars before driving back the next day.Oh, the romance!Only on this particular evening, my fiance, Sam, had already made plans to play in his weekly virtual game meetup with friends across the country. Exhibition at Museo de las Americas offers emotional tour of present-day Colombia

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:29:07 GMT

The best art exhibitions are sometimes the most difficult to consume. That is surely the case with “Colombia: The Corn, the River, and the Grave,” the raw and ambitious offering currently at Denver’s Museo de las Americas. The group show, featuring 15 contemporary Colombian artists, is a difficult plunge into the trauma inflicted upon the country due to its horrendous, five-decade-long civil war, which technically ended with a peace agreement in 2016 but remains unsettled in large regions. It is also the most riveting exhibition I’ve seen this year in Colorado, in terms of the individual objects hung on the wall.Erika Diettes submerges in water the clothing of people who disappeared during the Colombian Civil War then photographs the scene from above. The pieces are about how we hold onto memories of people who have left our lives. A 38-year-old woman was arrested and is facing charges of kidnapping after allegedly stealing a vehicle with a 93-year-old man inside, authorities announced Thursday.  The incident unfolded just after 9 a.m. Thursday, when a driver for a medical transportation company parked the van near the 15000 block of La Maida Street in Sherman Oaks with the 93-year-old passenger seated inside the vehicle, then exited the van to pick up another passenger, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.  That’s when police say the suspect, now identified as Lindsey Gordonellyson, got in the driver’s seat of the van and drove away with the elderly male occupant.  Officers with the Van Nuys Patrol Division were able to locate the vehicle with the help of LAPD’s Air Support Unit.  “The officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle; however, the suspect failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated,” the news release stated. “During the pursuit, th...

Alameda County DA Pamela Price casts criticism as ‘backlash’

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:29:07 GMT

OAKLAND — At a rally Sunday outside the Alameda County Superior Court, multiple speakers offered support for Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price, pushing back against what they described as unfair, slanted narratives about her four-month tenure as the county’s top law enforcement officer.Behind an array of dozens of residents wearing shirts with names of victims of crime on a day marking the start of this year’s National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, a lineup of supporters spoke plainly about their belief in her efforts, her office’s accomplishments and the forces they see arrayed against her and themselves. After gospel songs by Starlight Spiritual Temple’s Bishop L.E. Franklin and prayers by Oscar Grant’s mother Rev. Wanda Johnson opened the rally, civil rights activist and attorney Walter Riley led a moment of silence for “all the victims, in whatever capacity they became victims” before praising Price’s rise from...

How dangerous is fentanyl exposure to first responders, if at all?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:29:07 GMT

BILLERICA — Doubt has been cast on the Billerica Police Department’s recent report to the community that an officer lost consciousness and was hospitalized due to her exposure to fentanyl during an arrest.Police Chief Roy Frost claims the officer may have unintentionally inhaled the potent opioid when a bag containing the drug was torn open inside a suspect’s vehicle, causing the substance to become airborne within the tight space.“We are grateful that our officer is expected to make a full recovery, but alarmed that such a small amount of fentanyl caused an officer to lose consciousness,” Frost stated in a press release issued by the department on Thursday.Though there’s little doubt that illicit fentanyl sold on the street is dangerous when consumed, medical research has shown that experiencing an adverse medical reaction to fentanyl due to a brief exposure to the drug is highly unlikely. The facts of fentanylThe National Institutes of Health states fentanyl, a synthetic opioid use...
