Injured Twins reliever Brock Stewart hopes for return around Sept. 10

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:14:15 GMT

When Brock Stewart initially landed on the injured list on June 27 with soreness in his right forearm, the Twins reliever thought he just needed a little bit of time to let the area calm down.He never expected that two months later he’d still be on the injured list, working his way back from the injury.“I thought I was going to be back way sooner, so it’s been killing me, as you guys can imagine,” Stewart said. “Not my arm — it’s been killing me that I can’t help out the team more than I have.”Perhaps next month, he will have that chance once again.Stewart, who threw a 15-pitch bullpen on Friday, said he is targeting Sept. 10 or around then as a potential return. He’s scheduled to throw another bullpen early next week. Before his injury, he had established himself as an important piece of the team’s bullpen, giving up just two earned runs in 25 2/3 innings (0.70 earned-run average) while striking out 35, and getting a healthy, productive Stewart back could have immense benefits for t...

Dark & Stormy’s ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’ breathes new life into a neglected play

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:14:15 GMT

Jean Brodie is an unconventional educator. She exhorts the Scottish schoolgirls under her tutelage to turn away from safety and stability and run passionately into the arms of goodness, truth and beauty. She has much in common with Robin Williams’ life-affirming literature teacher in the film “Dead Poets Society.” But Jean Brodie is unapologetically open about playing favorites. She also often sets the curriculum aside entirely to regale with tales of past romances and her recent vacations. And, for one who claims devotion to her charges, she can seem more than a little self-absorbed.She stands at the center of “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” which began life as a 1961 Muriel Spark novel before Jay Presson Allen adapted it for the stage, then the screen, Maggie Smith taking home the Best Actress Oscar in 1970 for her portrayal of the title character. But Dark & Stormy Productions makes a convincing argument that the too-long-neglected play definitely deserves to be experienced.P...

Grieving mother's efforts succeed as hands-free phone law nears for Missouri drivers

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:14:15 GMT

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri has one of the loosest laws in the country when it comes to texting and driving, but that will change in the near future. Holding a phone to text, call, or perform other tasks while driving in Missouri will be considered illegal under SB 398. The legislation takes effect Monday as the Siddens Bening "hands-free" law. In 2019, one family from Columbia, Missouri, received a phone call no one wants to get. Randall Siddens, a father and husband, was struck while picking up cones after a triathlon race by a driver who was video-chatting. Five new Missouri laws to know that become official Monday Since then, Adrienne Siddens has been coming to the Missouri Capitol and advocating for a law to prohibit drivers from using their cell phone while driving. "She ended up swerving to miss the police officer, then ended up crashing into Randall and the back of the cone truck," recalled Adrienne. "He was thrown about 120 feet through the air, and he suffered a lot ...

By GRAHAM DUNBAR and JOSEPH WILSON (AP Sports Writers)GENEVA (AP) — FIFA suspended Spanish soccer federation president Luis Rubiales on Saturday while its disciplinary committee investigates his conduct at the Women’s World Cup final, which included kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain’s victory. The provisional suspension comes less than a week after Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in Sydney, Australia, and a day after Rubiales refused to resign, despite intense pressure from the Spanish government, women players, soccer clubs and officials. Rubiales’ conduct, which also included grabbing his crotch, has overshadowed the enormous accomplishment of Spain’s first Women’s World Cup title.Hermoso has said she did not consent to the kiss, and the team’s players have said they will not play any more games as long as Rubiales is in charge. It was not immediately clear how FIFA’s latest intervention might affect that.FIF...

SF Giants’ small wins no match for dominant Braves

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:14:15 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — Sean Manaea didn’t walk off the mound with a lead, but got a standing ovation from the home crowd. They’d seen how the left-handed featured pitcher managed to tame a Braves team that destroys left-handed pitchers. It wasn’t Manaea’s fault his outing wasn’t enough. The Braves barrel up the ball better than most in the league, so it’s worth celebrating Manaea holding them to just two hard hits and five strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. But the little wins haven’t been enough for the Giants lately, and certainly wasn’t enough in the Giants’ 7-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday afternoon. The Giants have lost 14 of their last 19 games.Manaea had some of his best stuff despite not throwing his changeup, getting plenty of weak contact and 13 swing-and-misses between his fastball and slider. But the Braves don’t need gifts to get a win; Austin Riley’s solo blast off Manaea untied a tied game in the fift...
