Edward LottermanOne is always a bit torn when an elected official you respect tries to solve a problem you think important by advancing a measure you think mistaken. This is the case with State Sen. Scott Dibble’s suggestion to better fund street and road improvements by floating a tax on deliveries-to-door services and an increase in the metro-area sales tax.Dibble, a DFLer whose district encompasses a good part of downtown Minneapolis, chairs the Senate Transportation Committee. I don’t know him personally, but like positions he has taken on varied interests. He seems a knowledgeable and productive legislator. What used to be a McDonald's on South Pearl Street, is now a fully-functioning, charity-controlled grocery store with fresh produce and prepared foods. MALTA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported stabbing on Luther Boulevard in the town of Malta just before 2 a.m. on Sunday. They say the victim was a 17-year-old boy. Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! Police say that their preliminary investigation determined that the offender stabbed the teen in the neck and then fled the scene. The victim went to Albany Medical Center Hospital for treatment.A media release from the Sheriff's Office did not include information on the victim's current condition. An intense fire broke out at Disneyland in Anaheim on Saturday night as packed crowds were enjoying a show at the theme park.The fire ignited on Tom Sawyer Island during the Fantasmic! nighttime water and fireworks show held on the Rivers of America.Citizen video captured by parkgoers shows massive flames fully engulfing Maleficent's dragon prop on stage. The flames first ignited from the dragon's face before spreading to the rest of its body. A shooting on the Hollywood Walk of Fame sent two people to the hospital and marked the second shooting in Hollywood in as many nights. The incident took place in front of a 7-Eleven convenience store at the intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Wilcox Avenue around 1 a.m. Sunday morning. Six people got out of a car in front of the store and one opened fire, police said. They all got back into the unidentified car and fled the scene. Shooting at Hollywood nightclub hospitalizes man Officers said they found a man with gunshot wounds to his head and back outside the store and a woman who was shot in the leg was found inside the store. Both victims were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.Video of the scene shows paramedics providing medical aid to a victim lying on the sidewalk while police put up crime scene tape and canvassed the area for leads and suspects. OAKLAND — A shoot-out early Sunday in East Oakland left a 19-year-old man in critical condition and another man wounded, police said.The shooting was reported about 12:59 a.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of 91st Avenue.Police said a party was being held at a home in the area and that dozens of people were in attendance.A dispute happened on the street outside the party and numerous people began exchanging gunfire, police said. What the dispute was about is under investigation.The 19-year-old Richmond man and a 19-year-old El Sobrante man were wounded. New park namedThe Milpitas City Council unanimously approved naming a 4-acre park after a group of Filipino farmworkers who led a strike for better wages and working conditions.Delano Manongs Park is directly north of the newly constructed Mabel Mattos Elementary School along McCandless Drive in the Milpitas Metro Specific Plan area. The park is named after the 1,500 Filipino-American agricultural workers, or “manongs,” who participated in the Delano Grape Strike of 1965. Manong is an Ilocano term that means older brother or uncle.The labor strike set the stage for the boycott that would lead Cesar Chavez and thousands of farmworker families to create the United Farm Workers.The park includes joint use areas for the city and the nearby elementary school, a sports field, picnic areas, all-inclusive play structures, a dog park, walking trails and restrooms.
