Price Controls: An Inflation Solution That Doesn’t Screw Workers

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:02:05 GMT

Centrist and right-wing economists continue to advocate for laying off workers and engineering a recession to address inflation. But why not set commodity price controls instead? This week on Deconstructed, Ryan Grim is joined by James K. Galbraith, a professor of government and business relations at the University of Texas at Austin. Galbraith has an extensive history of working in government, including as executive director of the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress and an economist for the House Banking Committee. Galbraith and Grim discuss the implementation of price controls by the U.S. government, how it brings down prices, how the Biden administration has used it and could use it more, and how Galbraith’s father — economist and politician John Kenneth Galbraith — was instrumental in setting commodity price controls during the post-World War II era.Transcript coming soon. The post Price Controls: An Inflation Solution That Doesn’t Screw Workers appeared first o...

STEAMY, STORMY AND SAHARAN DUST

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:02:05 GMT

Happy Friday, South Florida!Hopefully everyone has had a great holiday week!  Friday is finally here and conditions across South Florida remained the same through the entire week. Warm and muggy conditions in the morning have given way to steamy conditions each afternoon, as our feels-like temperatures have soared well into the triple digits. On Thursday, a few areas saw showers and thunderstorms, however, many areas also simply remained steamy through a big chunk of the day. This morning there were showers and thunderstorms over the Florida Bay lifting northward away from the Florida Keys but the storms fizzled before affecting any land areas.Unlike yesterday’s steering pattern out of the South, the weather pattern for South Florida will begin to change starting today. The wind direction across South Florida will veer out of the Southwest, which means showers and thunderstorms will favor the East Coast metro during the afternoon. With a warm Southwest wind flow in place, very...

TAMPA, Fla. (WSVN) — In the battle against mosquitoes, University of South Florida biologist, Ryan Carney, has employed cutting-edge technology to track and monitor these disease-carrying pests. Experts said malaria stands as one of the most significant health threats worldwide which emphasizes the urgent need to address the mosquito problem. “For malaria in particular, that’s only spread by anopheles mosquitoes as far as human malaria is considered,” said Carney.Recognizing the significant health risks posed by mosquitoes, Carney and his team have developed an innovative online tool called MosquitoDashboard.org. “So it’s basically an online interactive dashboard that maps the mosquito data and photos that citizen scientists take using one of our three partner apps,” said Carney. With mosquito-borne diseases resurfacing in Florida, this advanced tracking system aims to empower citizens and enhance public health efforts. Heat On Repeat

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:02:05 GMT

Back to back 90 degrees for some inland communities are in the books. Today, we’ll add day 3 for some. Places like Norwood, Bedford, Fitchburg, and Nashua, NH will have their chance of clinching the heat wave today as highs soar to 90 or just above it inland. At the beaches, it’ll be another fun one in the sun as temps hover around 80 with a breeze bending in from the ocean. We look dry from start to finish as showers and storms stay northwest of Worcester County, keeping it quiet across Central and Eastern Mass. Tomorrow, we’ll knock off a couple degrees, but it’s an overall solid start to the weekend. While a few pop-up showers and storms are possible, most of the favor inland locations (mainly near and northwest of 495), and even there, much of the day is dry. Highs run 75-80 at the beach to 85-90 inland. Sunday has more clouds and a passing isolated showers/storm, but most of the rain holds off, to our west during the day. That wet weather does move in Su...

An Orioles fan’s guide to MLB All-Star Week in Seattle

In each of the five most-recent seasons through 2022 that Major League Baseball held its All-Star Game, the Orioles sent just one representative. But as the fruits of an arduous rebuild finally reach the majors, the club’s fortunes are beginning to change. The Orioles will have four All-Stars — catcher Adley Rutschman, outfielder Austin Hays and relief pitchers Félix Bautista and Yennier Cano — in Seattle in 2023, their largest contingent since sending four in 2016. Rutschman is the crown jewel of the organization’s teardown as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft, and his arrival has coincided with a return to competitiveness for a club that hasn’t reached the playoffs since that 2016 season. While the spotlight will be on Rutschman as he returns to the Pacific Northwest, there are plenty of other things for Orioles fans to keep an eye on during All-Star Week in Seattle.All-Star Futures GameFor those hoping to catch a glimpse of the next wave of...
