Fourth of July parade injury: Woman impaled when pony bolts in Templeton A woman was impaled by the shaft of a pony cart when the animal bolted during the Fourth of July parade in Templeton.A pony pulling a cart holding two people ran into the crowd of spectators, said a report from the San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s office. The shaft that attached the cart to the harness stabbed the thigh of a 61-year-old woman.A witness told the Tribune that the animal — described both as a pony and a miniature horse — was spooked by a barking dog, and that the impaled woman had been holding a baby when she was knocked down. The woman was taken to a hospital; as of Wednesday morning, the sheriff’s office had no news of her condition. No other injuries were reported, and the parade was diverted to another street while the woman was treated.Templeton is a community of about 8,000 people between Paso Robles and Atascadero.Related ArticlesCrashes and Disasters | Three more California river deaths include 5-year-old in Mendocino County ...

Parenting behind bars: A new California law to keep incarcerated parents closer to their children The first prison Amika Mota entered was in Chino, an agonizingly long 10-hour drive from her children.During her two years in the California Institution for Women, Mota got to see 14-year-old Milo, 11-year-old Soleil and 6-year-old Blossom only once and mostly communicated through letters. Mota would write to her children once a week, but the letters couldn’t capture the joy of being in the same room.A case manager helped Mota get relocated to another women’s prison only two and a half hours away, and she was able to see her kids more frequently.A bill headed to the governor for approval could go a long way in eliminating some of the pain and anxiety of separation by requiring the state to place incarcerated parents in prisons located closest to their minor children. Assembly Bill 1226 was passed by the Senate Thursday night. California would become the second state with such a law, following the lead of New York.“All of us, whether we are Republicans or Democrats, have ...

Hockey Diversity Alliance feels betrayed, says NHL ‘late to party’ in launching inclusion coalition

Hockey Diversity Alliance feels betrayed, says NHL ‘late to party’ in launching inclusion coalition Akim Aliu and his fellow members of the Hockey Diversity Alliance say they feel betrayed and confused by the NHL’s decision to launch — or as far as the HDA is concerned, re-launch — an inclusion committee to diversify the sport and make hockey more welcoming.Whatever happened, Aliu wondered, to the league announcing a partnership with the HDA to address the same issues three years ago? And why, the HDA wondered in releasing a scathing statement Wednesday, is the NHL essentially duplicating what they’ve been doing by funneling millions into programs at the grassroots level and introducing hockey to at-risk youths in under-served communities of color?“As the NHL has done so many times, they’re late to the party, and they still want to show that they want to be involved in the dance,” Aliu, a veteran who played in a handful of NHL games, told The Associated Press. “This is their way of showing that this is their bigger and better thing. But I think everyone that’s on the inside of hoc...

South Africa Women’s World Cup players given more money after standoff over pay disparity CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — A foundation set up by African soccer president and billionaire businessman Patrice Motsepe stepped in Wednesday to resolve a pay dispute between South Africa’s Women’s World Cup players and their national association, ensuring they will get on a plane and head to the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. The dispute caused the entire squad to sit out a game on Sunday and was an embarrassment to the South African soccer association and a country bidding to host the next Women’s World Cup in 2027. It was also another indication of the long-standing issue of pay disparity between men’s and women’s soccer.South African soccer association president Danny Jordaan, whose organization came under stinging criticism over the last few days for not looking after its women players, conceded there was still “a massive gap” globally when it came to pay for men and women players despite world body FIFA’s efforts. To end the South ...
