AP’s earlier story follows below.KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian soldiers were still engaging Russian forces in fierce battles in and around Bakhmut on Sunday, military officials said, hours after Moscow and the private army Wagner announced that their troops had taken full control of the eastern city. The fog of war made it impossible to confirm the situation on the ground in the invasion’s longest battle, and a series of comments from Ukrainian and Russian officials added confusion to the matter.Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minsiter Hanna Malyar even...Afghan ministry says helicopter crash kills 2 crewmembers during patrol in country’s north

ISLAMABAD (AP) — An Afghan military helicopter crashed in the country’s north Sunday after hitting a power line base, killing at least two crewmembers, the Defense Ministry said. The MD-530 chopper was patrolling in the area after it took off from northern Balkh province and crashed in the Kholim district in Samangan province, a ministry statement said.Officials said the chopper hit the base of a high voltage power line before crashing. It’s unclear how many helicopters, including U.S. choppers, are in the hands of the Taliban-run government. As the U.S.-backed Afghan government collapsed in mid-August 2021, dozens of Afghan pilots fled to Central Asian countries, including Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.Afghan air force pilots played a key role, alongside their U.S. counterparts, in the 20-year war against Taliban insurgents. The conflict ended with the departure of foreign troops from Afghanistan in 2021. General manager Ryan Poles has made several moves to boost the Chicago Bears secondary since he took over in January 2022. In last year’s draft, he added cornerback Kyler Gordon and safety Jaquan Brisker in the second round. And late last month, he used another second-round pick on Tyrique Stevenson, a 6-foot, 198-pound cornerback who played two seasons at Georgia and two at Miami. Now Stevenson is expected to compete for playing time at corner with Gordon and Jaylon Johnson.Miami secondary coach Jahmile Addae coached Stevenson for his final season with the Hurricanes, during which Stevenson had two interceptions and nine passes defended.Addae spoke with the Tribune this month to share his experiences working with Stevenson. Memorial Day traditionally has been the first real mile marker in the long baseball season, in spite of its relative insignificance in a six-month marathon. In lieu of baseball’s ongoing quest to speed things up, we’ve decided to change that arbitrary milestone to May 21, more or less the quarter pole of the season.
