Joe Thornton retires: Why perspective is required when evaluating Jumbo’s career

Looking back on Joe Thornton’s 24-year NHL career, time has given everyone some valuable perspective. In the middle of it, particularly when he was at the height of his powers with the San Jose Sharks, fans could marvel at his skill, the fluidity and verve with which he played along with his extraordinary creativity and competitiveness. He was an artist, with a nasty streak. One could argue that during the 2000s, Thornton was the best player in the NHL on a year-in and year-out basis, perhaps even after 2005 when Sidney Crosby first came into the league. Certainly, no one amassed more points (886) that decade than Joe.His election to the Hockey Hall of Fame – after he becomes eligible in three years – is a given. But the caveat with Thornton, at least in some people’s minds, was he never won a Stanley Cup. Year after year, the Boston Bruins, the Sharks, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Florida Panthers all had terrific regular seasons only to fall short of winning 16 games once the pos...Closure of Eastbound Dumbarton Bridge begins Monday

DALLAS (AP) — Federal regulators have told Southwest Airlines that the carrier failed to provide enough help to travelers who were stranded during massive cancellations last December, and the airline could be subject to a fine.Southwest said in a regulatory filing Monday that it can’t estimate the cost of a fine and damages from lawsuits stemming from nearly 17,000 canceled flights last December.Southwest said the U.S. Department of Transportation told the airline Friday that “it has determined the company had failed to provide adequate customer service assistance, prompt flight status notifications, and proper and prompt refunds and that the assessment of a civil penalty is warranted.”The government indicated in January that it was investigating Southwest over the service collapse, which stranded more than 2 million travelers and cost the airline at least $1.1 billion in lost sales and extra costs including refunds.Southwest said in a quarterly financial filing Monday t...Enterprise CEO says rental car prices have moderated as supplies have improved but remain high

DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — Manuel Neuer is finally back for Bayern Munich. He won’t get much time to settle in before the “Klassiker” with Borussia Dortmund.Neuer’s long-awaited return Saturday from a broken leg, nearly a year after his last club game, was overshadowed by the action elsewhere on the field, with a spectacular Harry Kane goal and three red cards as Bayern won 8-0 against Darmstadt. It wasn’t the gentle post-injury introduction for Neuer that the score suggests. It was goalless at halftime before Darmstadt’s defense crumbled and Neuer faced four shots on target including making a solid save from Marvin Mehlem at 0-0.For a goalkeeper whose passing is so central to his game, the Darmstadt game wasn’t ideal practice either. Coach Thomas Tuchel had flagged up before the game the need for the 37-year-old Neuer — who broke his leg skiing in December — to get used to playing with a new-look team including off-season signing Kim Min-jae at center ...Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo set to be out for the rest of the year with shoulder injury

LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) — Leipzig will likely have to cope without Dani Olmo until the new year after the Spain midfielder injured his shoulder, coach Marco Rose indicated Monday.Olmo separated the acromioclavicular joint between his collarbone and shoulder blade shortly after coming off the bench in Leipzig’s 6-0 win over Cologne on Saturday. It was only Olmo’s third appearance since returning from a knee injury picked up while playing for Spain in early September and came three days after he scored against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.“I have great trust in the guys, in the squad, in our quality. It’s a shame that he’s not here and now we just need to keep it together without him until shortly before Christmas,” Rose said, calling Olmo an “irreplaceable key player”. Leipzig next plays Wolfsburg in the German Cup on Tuesday and its last game before the winter break is Dec. 19 against Werder Bremen. Olmo is set to miss Leipzig’s final three C...Latest news
